Why power transformers matter to Saudi Arabia, the GCC and the changing global energy system.
Power transformers are critical links between generating plants, transmission networks and major electricity users. Their design, availability and long-term reliability influence how power infrastructure is planned and delivered.
Three perspectives. One essential industry.
Saudi Arabia
For Saudi Arabia, developing local transformer capability offers a path to stronger industrial supply chains, specialist engineering skills and closer collaboration between manufacturers and grid users. SBM's development focus is on technology transfer, workforce training and progressive localization.
GCC & regional integration
The GCC interconnection enables electricity exchange and shared reserves, supporting regional reliability and more efficient use of generating capacity. This makes dependable substations, coordinated specifications and long-term equipment support important across the region.

Global grid investment
Renewable integration, electrification and infrastructure renewal are expanding the role of power networks. The IEA's 2023 analysis estimates that meeting national energy and climate goals requires adding or refurbishing more than 80 million kilometres of grids by 2040. This is a scenario-based global grid estimate, not a forecast for SBM.
What is shaping transformer demand?
Grid renewal
Replacing ageing equipment and strengthening network capacity.
Renewable connections
Connecting new solar and wind generation to demand centres.
Industry & infrastructure
Supplying industrial plants, utilities and expanding urban networks.
Digital economy
Meeting the power-infrastructure needs of data centres and other electricity-intensive facilities.
Why supply-chain readiness matters
In its February 2025 report, the IEA identified extended procurement times for major grid components and pressure on specialist manufacturing capacity. Early technical definition, coordinated procurement and workforce development can help projects address these constraints.
Power transformer essentials
What does a power transformer do?
It changes AC voltage levels so electricity can move between different parts of a power system. It does not generate electricity.
Why do voltage and MVA both matter?
Voltage describes the electrical levels being connected; MVA describes apparent-power capacity. A voltage class alone is not a complete equipment specification.
Why is qualification important?
Design review, manufacturing controls, agreed testing and customer acceptance establish whether an individual design meets its specified duty.
